Like, better websites, designed to tell the world how fantastic you really are. It's a short story (I promise). It's got some great bits about Bedouin tents (really.)

And it can make you very, very popular. (Well, with Google and your customers).

The Cube Lab isn't your typical web design company. If it was - well, I'd be a little disappointed.

When I created The Cube Lab, I wanted to do something amazing. I have a passion for great websites. And for websites that connect, instead of bamboozling.

I knew that I could give people extraordinary tools without the crazy prices other web designers charge - I just had to prove it. In fact, I was on a mission to show that everyone deserves amazing performance.

So, I started my own company where my heart had always been, in Exeter. (I tell people I think better with fresh air, but the truth is, I just like it here).

It's a small company, but perfectly formed. (It's just me and a dog and he's as cute as me). And it gave me a chance to design websites the way I wanted - which was the way customers seemed to want them, too. I made a rule that I'd always work honestly, never charge silly rates, and deliver brilliant work - no 'identikit' templates, nothing cheapo, and definitely nothing that wasn't hand-coded (that's right, everything I do is hand-built, by me.)

Funnily enough, it worked. And with a shedload of hard work thrown in, I've taken on some great clients, and delivered on some great projects. Like Cherry Blossom Cakes, Zeal Communications or Bedouin Tents.

I think the real difference is that I put myself in your shoes and think from your customer's point of view. You'll see benefits in weeks, not months or years. It's a big change for some clients, used to web designers stringing them along, charging for daft ideas, or suckering them in with low quotes that suddenly snowball.

Websites from The Cube Lab feel and look different: human, engaging, even fun. It's like that working with me, too. There are no secrets: prices are transparent, and you get exactly what you pay for, without any hidden surprises (well, the inspiration is free).

With a broad client base, I offer the diverse services you'd expect. That includes things like design, coding, graphics, email and hosting. (In technical terms, it's a humongous bundle.)

I have a simple philosophy: a site works better when you write it yourself.

Some ‘web designers’ can’t do that: they use software to piece together content, a bit like sticking toy building blocks to one another. When one block won’t work with another block, that’s when they get lost.

Because I know what each part of your site does, you enjoy the kind of quality and reliability that keeps customers coming back to The Cube Lab. And if you want to add something new, I can tell you exactly how it will work - then make it happen flawlessly.

It’s the idea that your site should be simple for you, because I know it inside out. And it’s at the heart of everything I do. Like, the design process.

I start off by getting to know your website goals as well as you do. What you want from the site. What you need it to achieve. How your clients use the web. Lots of questions, all important.

Then, I think about what you really need. That expensive site you thought you couldn’t live without? It turns out you can do just as well with a site that doesn’t break the bank. Or, there may be some great ideas you haven’t considered. Or some new audiences you can reach. So, I’ll come up with options and design concepts that let you see how your future site can look. And as I build the site, you’re in control. You can give me end goals to meet, or specify every specific feature you want - great for beginners and techies alike. At each stage, I work with you and explain the options, so you’re never in the dark. 

The site never goes live until you’re happy it’s perfect, either. That means you enjoy three rounds of design reviews until you’re sure it looks perfect. Not many people need them, but it’s great to know they’re there. (Can’t decide between puce and vermillion logos? It’s tricky).

If you like, I can handle the site well into the future, updating it and managing it. Or, you can use a simple and friendly Content Management System. I can host a site for you on incredibly reliable servers - or if you choose, you can select your own hosting provider.

I offer great email options, site testing, web marketing, search engine optimisation, original designs as standard… well, you get the idea. It’s about what you need, the way you need it.

The Cube Lab has given me the chance to work with some great organisations.

From small start-up businesses to more established companies, most are based nearby in Exeter, sunny Devon but some are located in other areas of the uk, some even in Australia (I get around, you know.)

They're lots of different sizes, and they do lots of different things. The one thing they have in common is a belief that their customers come first. So, they go out of their way to communicate with people. For them, a website has to look good, but be an ever better tool. If it doesn't connect, they don't.

It's a philosophy I agree with, and I hope the examples in the portfolio help to explain it.

And because you should get what you want, I offer three handy options that make it simple to find the perfect level of service. I call them cubes - there's a mini cube, a midi cube and a maxi cube but you can always think of them as small, medium and large.

If you like to pick and choose options, you can do that, too. So I offer lots of great bolt-ons. They’re nice to have, but they’re up to you.

And if you’re not sure what you need, don’t worry. A friendly chat can explain the choices, and it won’t cost you a penny.

Like everything I do, it’s about transparency and giving you control. And just as importantly - it’s about making your life easier.
